the METERS - KICKBACK - 2001
Like a dream come true! This new set documents some great lost work by The Meters -- recorded in the mid 70s, with a similar groove to their Warner/Reprise albums like Cabbage Alley, Rejuvenation, or Trick Bag. The tracks are mostly in demo format -- which gives them a much rougher sound than the Warner material, especially on the drums and bass parts, which could sometimes be a bit slicked up in the studio. Stylistically, though, the tracks are very similar to the Warner material -- with a punchy New Orleans groove that has the band hitting the guitars and organ heavily, and singing on most cuts with that rolling party style that peppered most of their post-Josie recordings. Titles include "Big Chief", "All I Do Everyday", "Love The One You're With", "Come Together", "What More Can I Do", "Keep On Marching Funky Soldier", and "Down By The River". CD also features bonus cuts -- including the funky funky "He Bite Me", plus "Easy (Trip)" and "Rock N Roll Medley".
