Bon Rock *** LP ** 1983
A great little old school release from Bon Rock -- a group that's best known for a flurry of crossover singles on the In The Mix label, stepping out here on their only full LP! The record's got a really great mix of electro, street soul, and hip hop -- grooves that are heavy on beats, basslines, and keyboards -- and lyrics that are mostly sung, but feature the odd rap once in awhile -- just enough to give the set a bit of street cred! Most tunes are nicely spare and simple -- quite compelling and hypnotic, and (dare we say it) just the sort of thing that might work wonderfully for spinning a bit on lino taped to the sidewalk. Cuts include "B Boy", "Searchin Rap", "I'm Hop", "Spell On Me", "Ooh Baby Please Come Back", and "It's Alright". CD also features 2 bonus tracks -- "Tomorrow" and "Junior Wants To Play".
