Styx - 1980 - Paradise Theater

One album before Styx cut loose with an honest-to-goodness concept album, Kilroy Was Here, they flirted with the idea on Paradise Theater. The concept here has something to do with the decline of America in the '70s, based on the condemnation and destruction of the Paradise Theater, a famous showplace in the band's hometown of Chicago. Truth be told, the concept hasn't held together that well, though the individual songs have, led by the optimistic ballad "The Best of Times," and the rockers "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Snowblind." Dennis DeYoung gives some of his most theatrical performances throughout, presaging his overly ambitious Kilroy concept, but also his successful run performing in the legitimate theater, as Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar. Paradise, meanwhile, was about as good as it got for Styx.

MARLENA SHAW - Take A Bite - 1980

Like Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marlena Shaw started out as a jazz singer but made a long detour into RB before returning to her straightahead jazz roots. Take a Bite was among the albums that Shaw recorded during her RB period, and this 1979 LP is her most disco-friendly release. 1979, of course, was the perfect time for her to be disco-friendly -- that was the year that gave us classics like Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" and Chic's "Good Times." Many of the soul and disco enthusiasts who bought this record didn't associate Shaw with Count Basie, but the jazz world did -- and not surprisingly, myopic jazz snobs believed that Shaw had committed heresy, treason and blasphemy by embracing disco. Some of them probably thought that an exorcism was in order. But truth be told, Take a Bite is nothing for the former Basie vocalist to be ashamed of. This LP shouldn't be judged by jazz standards because it doesn't pretend to be jazz; it is, however, an enjoyable disco/soul outing. Shaw takes dead aim at the dance floor with "Suite Seventeen," an extended disco medley that takes up all of Side 1. "It Was a Very Good Year" is the medley's main song, although "Suite Seventeen" also includes everything from Diana Ross' "Touch Me in the Morning" to Sam Dave's "I Thank You"." A gem that was defined by Frank Sinatra, "It Was a Very Good Year" started out as a traditional pop ballad but works surprisingly well as uptempo disco. Side 2, meanwhile, makes some dance-floor moves but also contains a gospel-drenched soul ballad titled "I'll Be Your Friend." Take a Bite isn't among Shaw's essential albums, but it's a decent record that fans of late '70s disco will appreciate.

GYPSY LANE - Predictions - 1978

Uptempo funk seems to be the strongest suit of this Philly combo -- done in a style that's got a smooth finish over the top, in kind of a post-Earth Wind & Fire mode. Lyrics are mostly about partying and hanging out, but are sung in a soulful way on the best cuts. Titles include "Show Me How To Groove", "We'll Have Love", "Hey Sister", and "I Could Use Some Loving".

The Supremes - Mary, Sherrie & Susaye (1976)

The Supremes went on disco, and do it very well. Their final album Mary, Scherrie & Susaye (1976, Motown) is a great album from start to finish. Produced by Brian and Eddie Holland of Holland-Dozier-Holland fame (who had produced some of the Supremes' biggest hits in the 1960's), it's probably one of their most underrated albums.

Michele Freeman - 1979 - Michele Freeman

Uptempo soul album by Michele Freeman with kind of a disco feel. Produced by Don Ray, who also played synthesizers on the album, and with the single "Tumble Heat". Other cuts have a similar feel, and include "Find the Fire", "Nice and Slow", and "Where'd You Get What You Got". Great cover with Michele being embraced by a Battlestar Galactica-ish space being.

world's midnight Probably paradise most successful line-up with all members of the band contributing to the songs and lyrics. Group developed a huge following amongst black and white christan funk fans in the UK whilst drawing the attention of secular music record executives.

Bands message was religious and uplifting but also found a way to attract kids from the street by the power of their funky sound.

Manager Mike Martin the main force behind this groups progress. Once referred to as the British answer to kool and the gang. Falsetto paul johnson , Like Philip Bailey gave the group an earth, wind and fire edge.

This album was recorded in England on Ebony Records / Pilgrim Records in 1982, but 10 000 copies of this album was also issued in US on the label :"Onyx International Records.
